Educational Philosophy
At an early age, I knew I was destined to be a teacher. As a child, when friends and family came over, we always played school and it was there my teaching career began because I was always the teacher. Throughout the years, I have discovered that teaching is not just a career, but a passion.
I believe that each child is a unique individual who deserves a secure, caring, and inspiring environment in which he/she will grow and mature mentally, emotionally, socially and intellectually. As a teacher, I will do my utmost best to ensure that each child meets his/her fullest potential in these areas, where he/she will become life-long learners.
I believe that not all children are able to work at the same paste, nor reach the same academic level, but each child has his/her own way of learning in the classroom. Therefore, in order to meet every student’s needs, I will incorporate the various ways of learning such as: verbally, kinesthetically, and visually. By doing so, I believe I will be helping my students learn in whatever way they are capable of, in order to meet the criteria of the curriculum.
Like John Dewey, I believe in progressive education. Students should be provided with engaging activities and lots of hands on projects. With engaging, exciting units, students will be more excited about the content of the curriculum and will be motivated to continue the journey.
Along with those activities comes assessment. I believe that one of the ultimate purposes of assessment is to support and enhance student learning. Though some assessments may not be able to show a teacher all what a student knows, it will allow the teacher to see areas in which he/she needs to work with the students on.
Assessment may sometimes be a difficult task, but it one of the most important tasks in a classroom. Since all students are not the same, a variety of assessing methods should be used in the classroom. I believe that by assessing in variety, the teacher will provide fair and unbiased results as to whether or not the students have mastered the contents learned.
Also, my classroom will operate like a community, because I do believe that students learn from each other. Therefore, service learning and community service will play a big role in my classroom. This will give students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom and connect it to the needs of our local and global community. I believe that it will also give students the opportunity to believe in themselves just like the teacher should believe in them.
Finally, I believe that in order for a class to function properly, it is important to have a set of rules along with consequences that are suitable for the whole class. If students are not capable of following the classroom rules, I believe they should be isolated, but as a teacher, I must continue to give them attention.
In addition to classroom rules, I believe that to make sure all my students are ready to learn, I need to make sure there are a set of routines and procedures which my students will follow everyday upon entering the classroom. I believe that the number of interruptions to academic instruction will be reduced and the class will flow more smoothly.
